THE PERIODICAL «ILIUSTROVANI VISTI» (1940–1941): A VISUAL CHRONICLE OF UKRAINIAN LITERARY AND ARTISTIC LIFE
This article explores the history and operational context of the literary and artistic journal «Iliustrovani Visti», which was published during the German occupation. It examines the composition of the editorial board and contributors, outlines the journal’s structure and visual design. The main objective is to reconstruct the history of the journal’s emergence, clarify the reasons for its discontinuation, refine the composition of the editorial team, and identify the pseudonyms and cryptonyms used by its contributors.
To achieve this research tasks were undertaken: a systematic content analysis of all journal issues, registering contributors’ names and editorial materials; a review of dictionaries of concealed names to decode pseudonyms and cryptonyms; a review of dictionaries of hidden names to uncover pseudonyms and cryptonyms; an examination of academic works on Ukrainian cultural and publishing activities from 1939 to 1944 under German occupation; and an analysis of memoirs by participants in the Ukrainian press and publishing of that period.
The relevance of this study lies in its focus on «Iliustrovani Visti» as a media phenomenon, previously explored primarily for its content. Its novelty stems from a comprehensive analysis of the journal’s content and sources, clarifying its history, editorial practices, and authorial identities. The research employs general along with specialised scientific methods, including comparative historical-bibliographic, biographical.
The first issue of «Iliustrovani Visti» was published in Kraków in April 1940 by «Ukrainske Vydavnyctvo» (the Ukrainian Publishing House), aiming to document Ukrainian cultural life and serve as a platform for writers and artists. While Mykhailo Khomiak was the official editor, editorial duties were in practice undertaken by Lev Lepkyi (1940) and Sviatoslav Hordynskyi (1941). The 1941 editorial board included Vasyl Karkhut and Edward Kozak. In total, 20 issues were published, with the final one in December 1941.
The article concludes that «Iliustrovani Visti» played a significant role in shaping Ukrainian cultural identity in exile and remains a valuable source for the study of Ukrainian culture during the German occupation.
