The Journalism of Dmytro Doroshenko in «Ukrainske Slovo» (Berlin, 1921–1922)
The purpose of this article is to examine Dmytro Doroshenko’s journalistic activity in the journal «Ukrainske Slovo», published in Berlin in 1921–1922. The object of the study is the journal «Ukrainske Slovo», and the subject is Doroshenko’s journalistic contributions to it as part of his broader socio-political engagement in exile. A brief review of the current state of research shows that most studies devoted to Doroshenko focus primarily on his contributions to Ukrainian historical scholarship, historiography, bibliography, and political thought. By contrast, his direct involvement with the print media of the Ukrainian émigré community remains insufficiently explored. Therefore, the relevance of this study lies in the need for a comprehensive examination of Doroshenko’s journalistic legacy within the context of his collaboration with «Ukrainske Slovo» in Berlin – an important source for reconstructing the socio-political discourse of the Ukrainian émigré press in the early 1920s.
The methodological foundation of the study is based on the principles of historicism, objectivity, and systematicity, as well as on press and source studies approaches and content analysis. The article analyzes the content, themes, and ideological-political orientation of Doroshenko’s publications in «Ukrainske Slovo», classifying them according to genre. Particular attention is paid to Doroshenko’s role as a proponent of the idea of Ukrainian statehood within the information space of the émigré press. The conclusion emphasizes the resonance of his writings with the political and ideological concerns of the time, underlining their state-building orientation and national-patriotic message. The significance of Doroshenko’s journalism for the formation of socio-political thought within the Ukrainian émigré community of the early 1920s is also highlighted.
