Frankiana in the women’s press of galicia

The aim of the article is to analyze the variability of Frankiana representation in the women’s press of Galicia: from evaluations of Ivan Franko’s basic thesis that a society’s attitude towards women determines the level of its cultural development, and his research into the social status and spiritual world of women based on folklore materials, to ideological doctrines, recollections of contemporary female writers and companions of the poet, reflections on the role of Franko’s genius in literature, in the spiritual development of the Ukrainian nation and its statehood, and forms of commemoration, including the ceremonial unveiling of the monument at Lychakiv in 1933. The objective of the study is to identify, systematise, and analyse the journal publications of «Meta», «Nova Khata», «Zhinocha Dolia» and its supplement «Zhinocha Volia», «Zhinka», «Zhinochyi Holos», and «Ukrainka», which illuminated the process of interpreting Franko’s views on emancipation processes and the formation of the poet’s cult in Galicia from a «female perspective». Research methods: Historical, biographical, and analytical, allowing for the tracing of the social context of the emancipation movement, Ivan Franko’s role in it, and his personal relationships with female figures of Ukrainian culture. The article’s novelty lies in the fact that the figure of Ivan Franko is systematically examined through the lens of the women’s press of Galicia in the first half of the 20th century for the first time. The identification of specific problem-thematic clusters illustrating the vectors of the development of the Franko cult contributes to forming a comprehensive receptive picture, while the press publications of the women’s periodicals highlight the feminist discourse both in Ivan Franko’s life and creative work and in the Franko studies of that time. Conclusions: An analysis of the wide range of aspects of press-based Frankiana indicates that the authors often turned to the figure of Ivan Franko, striving to express gratitude for his attention to the issue of emancipation during his lifetime. The prevalence of anniversary materials, typically published in May and June, determines their genre specificity and journalistic character.

Keywords: Ivan Franko, women’s press of Galicia, feminism, Franko studies.
