The archives of Maria Furtak-Derkach in the Manuscript Department of the Vasyl Stefanyk National Scientific Library of Ukraine in Lviv contain the official diaries of the head of the Manuscript Department of the Library of the Shevchenko Scientific Society in Lviv, Dr. Maria Derkach. The service diary, which covers events from July 17, 1942 to March 8, 1943, is the second lar­gest diary in chronological order – after the weekly calendar of the same author for February 1, 1939 – January 1, 1940 published by us. It concerns the period of the German occupation of Lviv and contains very valuable information about the activities of the NTSh Library, which at that time was part of the system of German state libraries in the General Governorate of Galicia (Staatsbibliothek Lemberg).

This includes information about the peculiarities of the functioning of state institutions, the staff of the library and their living conditions, the movement of funds and their processing. We can also learn about the users and visitors of the library during the war, about the valuable collections of documents that came to the library during this period. And the librarian’s numerous extracts from the sources that she had to process fill the routine work with literary pearls, since they belong to the pen of the foremost figures of Ukrainian litera­ture, science and culture. The diary also constantly features the musical life of Lviv, which the author was keenly interested in.

We are publishing the text of the diary, which shows that even in the most unfavorable times of social cataclysms for culture, just like now, during the full-scale russian-Ukrainian war, Ukrainian librarians conscientiously fulfilled and are fulfilling their mission: collecting and preserving national spiri­tual treasures. Thanks to their difficult daily work, the Ukrainian scientific library was protected from military threats and the funds were formed in the summer of 1942 – spring of 1943. Despite the official nature of the diary, we can also learn a lot about the “survival strategies” of Galicians during the war and the German occupation of Western Ukraine.
