Archival Heritage of Yosyp Stadnyk in the Funds of Vasyl Stefanyk National Scientific Library of Ukraine in Lviv

This article is dedicated to the analysis of the archival heritage of Yosyp Stadnyk, a prominent Ukrainian director, actor, translator, and educator, preserved in the funds of Vasyl Stefanyk National Scientific Library of Ukraine in Lviv. The archive contains a vast array of documents, which can be conditionally divided into two groups: documents of creative activity (scores, stage adaptations, translations, convolutes) and collection documents (scores, books, translations of works, stage adaptations of works, theater studies journals, plays).

The research focuses on the peculiarities of the archive, including the linguistic diversity of the presented documents, handwritten corrections, and directorial notes, which testify to Stadnyk’s active work as a theatrical reformer. A significant part of documents contains imprints of seals and stamps, confirming their use in theatrical practice, particularly within the theaters headed by Yosyp Stadnyk.

Special attention is paid to theater studies journals, which contain articles, reviews, theater chronicles, and even mentions of Stadnyk himself and his family members. They are an important source for reconstructing the theatrical life of the first half of the 20th century, the development of Ukrainian stage culture, and the integration of European traditions into Ukrainian theater.

The article applies methods of analysis, synthesis, descriptive, chronological, biographical and historical approaches, which allowed a detailed study of the archive’s structure, classification of documents, and evaluation of their significance for theater studies.

The research results show that the archival heritage of Yosyp Stadnyk is a valuable source for theater scholars, musicologists, historians, and culturologists. It provides an opportunity to better understand not only the creative method of Yosyp Stadnyk but also the general trends in the development of Ukrainian theater in the context of sociocultural changes in the first half of the 20th century.
